The spare bedroom became the office in 2020. Six years later, the folding table and the bookshelf from college are still there. If you’re done working from furniture that was never meant for it, here’s what built-in home office cabinetry costs in Portland.
The short answer
Most custom home office built-ins we build land between $4,000 and $15,000, installed. A desk wall with shelving sits at the low end. A full office — desk, bookcase walls, file storage, closed cabinets — lands at the top.
What drives the price
Linear feet. Same rule as every built-in: more wall, more cost.
Desk vs. storage. A simple desk run is straightforward. Floor-to-ceiling bookcases with adjustable shelving take more material and more shop time.
Drawers and file storage. File drawers, printer cabinets, and closed storage add cost over open shelving — and they’re what keep the office looking like an office instead of a paper warehouse.
Lighting. Integrated lighting in bookcases is one of the best upgrades you can buy. It adds to the price and transforms the room.
Material and finish. Painted maple is the workhorse. White oak and walnut cost more and photograph beautifully for the video calls.
What a typical project looks like
A common setup: a 10-foot wall with a built-in desk, overhead shelving, and a bookcase section with adjustable shelves. Painted finish. That usually lands around $7,000–$10,000, designed, built, finished, and installed.
Why built-in beats freestanding
Freestanding desks wobble. Bookcases from the big-box store lean. Built-ins are anchored, level, and sized to your wall — and they make a spare bedroom look like it was always meant to be an office, which matters when you sell.
How long it takes
Our standard lead time is 4–6 weeks from approved drawings to installation. Most home offices install in one to two days.
