The question every kitchen starts with, and the one hardest to answer honestly online: what does it actually cost? Here’s what we see from the shop floor.
The real range
Most of our custom kitchens land between $15,000 and $45,000 for cabinetry, finished and installed. A small galley kitchen with straightforward boxes can come in under $15k. A large kitchen with an island, tall pantry walls, and premium hardwoods goes higher.
Anyone quoting you a firm number without measuring your kitchen is guessing.
What drives the cost
Layout and linear feet. More cabinets, more money. An L-shaped kitchen with 15 linear feet of cabinetry costs roughly half what a 30-linear-foot kitchen with an island costs. Size is the single biggest factor.
Door style and construction. Flat-panel (slab) doors are the most economical. Shaker-style with five-piece doors costs more in labor. Inset cabinetry — doors set flush inside the frame — is the most labor-intensive and the priciest.
Wood and finish. Paint-grade finishes are the most affordable and the most popular. Stained hardwoods like white oak or walnut cost more — the material is pricier and the finishing takes longer.
Hardware and accessories. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides are standard in our work. Pull-outs, lazy Susans, trash pull-outs, tray dividers, and spice storage add convenience and cost. Worth it in the spots you use every day.
The room itself. Old Portland houses are charming and out of square. We scribe every cabinet to fit your actual walls, which takes skill and time — and it’s why custom fits where stock never will.
Custom vs. semi-custom vs. stock
Stock cabinets come in fixed sizes off a warehouse shelf. Cheapest, fastest, and you’ll fill the gaps with filler strips.
Semi-custom gives you more sizes and finishes, but you’re still fitting your kitchen to their catalog.
Custom — what we do — is built to your exact dimensions, your layout, your wood, your finish. Every inch is usable. It costs more than stock, but there’s no comparison in fit, quality, or how long it lasts.
What about the full remodel?
Cabinetry is typically 30–40% of a full kitchen remodel budget. If you’re planning counters, appliances, plumbing, and electrical too, budget accordingly — but start with the cabinets, since everything else gets measured around them.
